Battery-buffered fast charging without grid expansion: ORLEN Austria relies on KREISEL CHIMERO

How can a battery-buffered charger enable high-performance fast charging quickly and cost-effectively – even at locations with limited grid capacity and space?

The project by ORLEN Austria at the Turmöl site in Ried clearly demonstrates how this can be achieved using KREISEL Electric’s battery-buffered charging station. By deploying an integrated solution, the charging infrastructure was not only expanded, but additional value was also created for the site.

Challenge: Limited Grid Capacity and Space Constraints

For ORLEN Austria, it was clear early on that fast-charging infrastructure is a key component of future mobility. At the same time, it quickly became evident at the Ried site that a conventional implementation would involve significant challenges.

A traditional solution would have required the construction of a transformer station as well as a substation – resulting in additional costs and long project timelines. Moreover, the limited space available at the filling station posed another critical constraint, as infrastructure such as transformers is difficult to integrate into existing sites.

Solution: CHIMERO – Battery-Buffered High Performance Charger

During the search for a suitable solution, ORLEN Austria came across the KREISEL CHIMERO, a battery-integrated fast charger specifically designed for locations with limited grid capacity.

The decision to implement this system was made deliberately, as it fulfills several key requirements at once: it requires significantly less space, reduces investment costs (TCO), and enables much faster deployment compared to conventional approaches.

High Charging Power with Limited Grid Capacity

A look at the key figures highlights the performance of the solution. The Ried site delivers up to 180 kW of charging power. It requires a grid connection capacity of only around 90 kW.

This is made possible through the interplay of battery storage and dynamic load management. It also includes the integration of locally generated photovoltaic energy. The available energy is intelligently managed and optimally distributed among the various consumers at the site.

As a result, the system ensures reliable fast-charging infrastructure. It also efficiently integrates the existing energy demand of the gas station.

Fast Implementation and Easy Integration

Another key advantage of the project is the speed of implementation. While conventional infrastructure projects often take 8-10 months, sometimes up to a year. KREISEL was able to deliver the solution in Ried within a very short timeframe.

From initial contact to implementation, the entire process took only around three months. Installation on-site was also straightforward: within just a few days, technicians were able to connect the system and put it into operation.

The plug-and-play integration enabled seamless incorporation into the existing infrastructure of the gas station. It required no extensive structural modifications.
