KREISEL Electric co-operates with Candela to Revolutionize Electric Hydro Foil Ferry Technology

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – KREISEL Electric, provider of battery technology, is pleased to support Candela, a manufacturer of electric watercraft, in improving the performance and safety of its P-12 hydro foil ferry through innovative battery solutions.
Candela CEO, Gustav Hasselskog, highlighted the integration of KREISEL battery packs has been important in the development of the P-12 hydro foil ferry. “When we began developing this ferry, we needed a battery solution that was not only energy-dense and approved for passenger use but also capable of operating safely in various climates,” he stated. “Above all, we needed something that would be super safe.”
Gustav Storck, Powertrain Team Lead at Candela, added, “When working with batteries, it’s always a compromise between energy density, performance, safety, and all those aspects. We felt like KREISEL was right in the sweet spot for our application.”
KREISEL battery packs are designed with modularity in mind, allowing Candela to easily adjust the number of battery packs used. Originally designed with four packs, the P-12 hydro foil ferry has now transitioned to using six, demonstrating the flexibility and scalability of the KREISEL technology.
“This adaptability has significantly enhanced our operational capabilities,” noted Gustav Storck, Powertrain Team Lead at Candela.
All KREISEL batteries feature Dynamic Performance Management, which utilizes patented cell immersion cooling technology and advanced software systems. The immersion cooling solution, utilizing a dielectric fluid, is a key feature. This technology effectively manages thermal performance while also serving as a safety barrier, crucial for minimizing thermal runaway in high-load situations, thus meeting the rigorous DNV safety standards required for passenger ferries.
With the first KREISEL battery packs delivered during the prototype phase three years ago, Candela is now in serial production, with multiple units being manufactured. The collaboration is set to continue expanding, contributing to the development of electric ferry technology.
